Justice for Jane Clough

Goal : 14249 / 500000

On Sunday 25th July 2010, Jane Clough was savagely murdered in the grounds of Blackpool Victoria Hospital as she arrived to start her night shift as an A & E nurse.

Her killer, Jonathon Vass, was her former partner and the father of her baby (name withheld due to ongoing court proceedings). Jane had recently returned to work after her maternity leave finished.

Vass, a body builder, heavily into steroid abuse had appeared in court on 1st December 2009 charged with 3 counts of rape against Jane. Jane had been strong enough to report the cases to the police and the CPS had met the required thresholds for prosecution of the rapes. He was further charged nine days later with 6 counts of rape, 3 assaults and 1 sexual assault. Despite objections by the Police and Crown Prosecution Service, and having been told that 'he was extremely likely to interfere with the witness' he was released on bail by Judge Simon Newell.

He was suspended from his job as an ambulance technician and then dismissed in May 2010.

Throughout the period, Jane was in hiding with her young daughter at her parents’ home as she was convinced that Vass intended to harm her. Despite her, and her family and police concerns, Vass was not re-arrested.

Jane had been awarded a residence order and sole custody of her child until she was 16.

Jane had only been back at work for about 6 weeks after her maternity leave ended when Vass brutally attacked her as she arrived to start her night shift inflicting muliple stab wounds before cutting her throat.

Since her murder, Jane’s family, supporters and friends have campaigned actively for a change to the law that allows such an event to occur.

The family’s MP, Andrew Stepehnson was granted 10 minutes on 28th June to recommend an amendment to the Bail Bill that allows for such an appeal to take place where there is the strong belief that the judge has “got it wrong”

This Bill will get its second reading in Parliament on 20th January 2012. We the undersigned believe that such an amendment should become law and that victims should, via the Crown Prosecution Service, be allowed to appeal a Judge’s decision to grant bail.

Having just watched your family and friends retell what happened to you before your cruel, unfair removal from this earth, I signed the petition to change the laws in parliament as I believe things need to change. Justice for jane. Agree wholly with this petition, nd hope you now rest in peace, your family will get justice for you, and you gorgeous daughter I'm sure will always know who you are and know you are with her as she grows up. Sincere sympathies to all the family, and I hope Vass is denied parole in 2040 and receives a full life sentence, as he has given to you, just much more unjustified. RIP Jane, sleep well. Xxx

I watched the programme Someone's Daughter, Someone's son last night. So sad! Jane was let down by our legal system. If that evil so and so had not been let out on bail, Jane would still be alive!

I broke my heart watching the documentary last night. What a brave and courageous girl but your family should never had to tell that story as you should have been protected by the system that so badly let you, Imogen and your family and friends down. I will sign your petition Jane to try and ensure that this does not happen again. Bide yes safe Bonnie Lassie xxxx.

I saw the story in the paper yesterday and was absolutely disgusted and sick to the stomach to hear what the so called law thought was correct. This law has to change, it failed to support jane who was an extremely brave to stand up and tell her story. How can the law be correct when when all crimes the coward, bullying piece of scum like Vass not be put against him. I loose faith in the law more and more and feel the victims of crime should be first thought, the criminal has it to much there own way. I will give my full support to this campaign and will get as many as I can to sign this petition. My thoughts are with the family and offer my whole hearted condolences for your tragic loss.

I am a victim of domestic abuse. My husband is currently on bail after a serious assault to me and I live in constant fear of him coming back to finish what he started. The assault took place in May 2011 and his trial is the 28th and 29th February 2012....this is 9 months of feeling intimidated and vulnerable and unprotected. I fully support this campaign as it will prevent deaths of women like Jane, and keep women like me safe. My thanks go out to Jane's family for taking this step. It won't bring Jane back and it won't help me now, but it will help an untold number of women in the future, and to save them from the constant fear that women like Jane, and me go through every day after reporting domestic violence is something amazing.

I've just signed this petition as it is truly beyond words what has happened. And I'm not trying to be funny but please don't liken him to an animal. Animals don't do this sort of thing to their kin. We could learn a lot from the behaviour of animals. Best wishes.

Had a mixture of emotions watching the program about what happened to poor Jane. First complete sadness for Jane and her family and friends that she had been brutally murdered, and then total anger that the monster that did this had been bailed beforehand. Jane had done everything right in doing what so many victims of rape don't do and thats speak up. She showed immense bravery. He should have been locked up until trial.. and then left to rot. The system needs to change.

Jane's family and friends gave a great tribute to her and we all now know what a lovely person she was. She is a credit to her family. I hope that Penny and John know how much people are thinking about them and we are all behind you.

This should never happen again.  Janes family are very brave in taking this action, under what must be the most terrible of  cirumstances.  Good luck with your campaign, RIP Jane.
