Keep The Arts Alive In Wellingborough

Goal : 592 / 1000

The Castle (Wellingborough) Ltd, who have run The Castle Theatre and Arts Centre for the past 15 years, has been in negotiations with Wellingborough Borough Council for the contract to run your venue for the next 10 years.

Last week they presented to the council's Resources Committee their business plan, which includes continuing to offer high quality professional productions, hire for our great local societies, and the fantastic participation classes attended weekly by hundreds of young people and adults.

Following the council meeting, the Resources Commitee have recommended that Phoenix Leisure Management Ltd be awarded the contract. Phoenix currently run Kettering Conference Centre and The Lighthouse.

Currently it is unknown how Phoenix intend to run the venue and what changes they would make.

We believe that it's cruicial to continue to offer live theatre and opportunities to participate in our local area and we are concerned that this may now be at risk.

Don't let theatre disappear in Wellingborough. Sign our petition to show the local council how important it is to have a facility in the local area that offers these experiences and opportunities.

The title of this petition is misleading. As far as i can tell there's no suggestion that the theatre being taken over represents a threat to the arts. It represents a threat to the  current management and should be retitled as such.

Hi Jonathan. We do agree with you that the plans should be made public as to how companies intend to run The Castle. This campaign is purely to protect theatre, the arts and participation in the town at The Castle - regardless of the management of the venue. We believe that art should be at the heart of The Castle, and not as a secondary function. The council are aware of both business plans, we hope they use this campaign to support art to inform their decision making and keep culture in the town by awarding the contract to the right company.

I strongly support the idea of the Castle theatre continuing, but will this petition really help? Surely if we are not privy to the plans the new company (or the old company for that matter) have how can we make a considered decision to support them or otherwise? It is clear that the borough simply cannot afford to continue to shovel funds in to maintain the stability of the theatre, so maybe a new company with fresh ideas and a sustainable business plan should be given an opportunity to run the theatre. Previously the financial debacles have caused massive instability and  fuelled a lack of confidence among the public toward the way the theatre has been managed. So, with respect, without the facts can anyone really sign up for this petition with a real understanding of the situation. I reiterate that I am very much in favour of the theatre staying open providing the business plan is well prepared and sustainable.
