A planning application has been submitted which includes the demolition of the southern wall and felling of trees in the south-facing garden of 15 Crescent Place, Kemp Town, Brighton, to make a car parking space. Crescent Place is unique in Kemp Town, in that it offers "a green oasis within the urban area, giving openness to the street scene at this point [15 Crescent Place] which is unusual in this densely built-up area. The mature trees on the site are of interest within the street scene" [Brighton and Hove Planning Officer, 2010]. Crescent Place itself is sign-posted by the Council as a route for visitors to and from the Kemp Town shops, Marine Parade and Madeira Drive, encouraging pedestrians to take full benefit of the unusual vista it provides.

The south side of 15 Crescent Place is currently laid to garden which includes fruit trees and flowering shrubs, the uppermost parts of which are visible over the wall which at this point is about 2 metres high. The garden provides to the street access to greenery, and in season, a riot of colour from roses, leaves and blossom, most particularly from the magnificent cherry tree which, when the wind is right, covers the street like pink confetti. The garden wall and glimpses of the garden beyond provide a touch of mystery; many times in the course of a year do visitors stop, peer on tip-toe, parents raise young children up to shoulder height to enquire – a bit of Secret Garden in a Kemp Town street!

The loss of this unique 'street scene' for the sake of a single car parking space should not be allowed.
