Petition to: John Fry, Chief Executive, Johnston Press PLC (108 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, EH8 8AS)

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the futures of the Doncaster Free Press, South Yorkshire Times (Mexborough), Selby Times, Goole Courier and Epworth Bells given the recent announcements from South Yorkshire Newspapers over job cuts.
We call on you, as the head of Johnston Press which owns these titles, to personally intervene to find an acceptable resolution to the dispute between the company and the National Union of Journalists that has forced journalists to take indefinite strike action.
Failure to do so would damage the reputation of your company in the eyes of local communities.

As a former journalist who was trained well at The South Yorkshire Times and worked until taking early retirement at The Sheffield Star, I urge you to think again and to realise the importance of The South Yorkshire Times to the Dearne Valley. This newspaper has existed for well over 100 years and since tak,ing it over in recent years Johnston Press has presided over its decline with a series of questionable management decisions and lack of proper investment in its title. Johnston Press claims to be a champion for community newspapers. How can that claim be properly justified with yet another merging of titles and eventually the loss of the weaker titles?
