Eneko Goieaskoetxea was arrested in Cambridge on Sunday 7/07/2011 in a joint operation with the Spanish Guardia Civil. Eneko has become one of the top rated prisoner in the UK as a suspected member of pro-independence group ETA and he has been kept in Belmarsh prison under an extremely harsh regime since his arrests. However, there has never been any evidence to support these charges. In addition, Eneko was carrying a perfectly normal life in Cambridge for years before the arrest took place. At that time, he was living in Cambridge with his two children, working in an IT firm, being a member of a squash club and, at the time, leading a quiet and decent life.
Through all these years his main objective was to carry a normal life. He was fully committed to his children, supporting them in their language learning and in all sorts of activities. He took part in community groups and in his local school. He also managed to be highly appreciated at work through all these years.
Eneko has been incarcerated for four months and most part of this time he has been held in insolation. The life conditions within the high security unit at Belmarsh are extremely difficult. He spends 22 hours a day lock up in his cell and he does not have the opportunity to study or take part in any other activity. He has very limited access to reading and no chance to read any texts from abroad. He does not have access to a radio either. In addition, he can only get visits from close relatives which are always behind a window glass.
Eneko’s life in prison is unnecessarily hard and unfair. Under these circumstances, he is finding great difficulties to feel up all the hours that he has to stay in his cell and it also puts a lot of pressure in his wife and children.
As many other people in the Basque Country, Eneko has been accused of a crime he never committed solely based on the testimony of other detainees obtained under incommunicado regime. To escape threats to his freedom and physical well-being, Eneko left the Basque lands and sought refuge in Britain where he has been carrying a normal life for many years. Everybody that knows Eneko will realise immediately the seriousness and irrationality of this situation.
We demand from the government and immediate end to the special prison regime in which he is currently kept. We would also like to call on the British government and judicial authorities to immediately reject the extradition requests and to refuse to collaborate with the Spanish government’s political persecution of Eneko Goieaskoetxea.

We support the right of Eneko to live freely in Cambridge.
